Physician Services in the Town of Grenfell

For Immediate Release:

Town of Grenfell, SK. – On July 11, members from Grenfell Town Council were informed by the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) that as of August 31st, 2017 Dr. Bright Pebane would no longer be practicing at the Grenfell Health Centre and Wolseley Hospital. Of importance is the fact that this change was not brought on by decisions from either the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, Government of Saskatchewan or the Towns of Grenfell or Wolseley.

RQHR also informed the Town that they have recruited a new physician through the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment Program (SIPPA), that is due to complete his/her training and subsequently begin work in mid-February.

To cover the time from Dr. Pebane’s absence to the new physician’s start date, RQHR has advised that, effective immediately, they will begin a search for a full-time locum physician. Until such a time that a full-time physician begins work, the Town has been assured by RQHR that no further changes are planned for the Grenfell Health Centre. RQHR will work with existing physicians in the area to cover the needs of Grenfell & District Pioneer Home.

A statement from MLA Steven Bonk reiterated that the government has, and has never had any intentions of closing health facilities – this including the Grenfell Health Centre and the Grenfell & District Pioneer Home.

The Town of Grenfell will remain in close contact with the RQHR to monitor progress on an interim replacement until the area’s SIPPA candidate is ready in February. Town Council will communicate any new news as it is received.

It goes without saying that this is an unexpected and unfortunate event to occur, and the Town of Grenfell would like thank Dr. Bright Pebane for his many years of dedication and patient care to our residents and surrounding areas. We wish him and his family the best in their future endeavours.

We ask that if anyone has any further questions or concerns that they be brought to Council, either through submission to the Town Office or direct communication.
Mayor and Council,
Town of Grenfell
